Eco Christmas Tip 4 – Food Waste

Every year in Britain 16.5 million turkeys are bought. This is equivalent to 1 turkey for every 3 people in the UK and racks up about 4,200 tonnes of aluminium foil to be binned each Christmas. The average family also wastes about 1/3 of the food they buy at Christmas.

This year to cut food and packaging waste, try your best to choose things that are light in packaging or even buy loose items. Just because something is on a ‘Buy One Get One Half Price’ deal doesn’t mean you should buy 2 of it, only buy the amount of food you need as chances are you will end up throwing it away.

Anything that is leftover can be made into new meals. The BBC have lots of recipe ideas, or you could try and create something new! Why not try making turkey pie? or curry? Brussel sprouts curry is also lovely too. Then when you don’t know what else to do with it, put it in the freezer to save for later or compost it.
